This may be another summer where people vacation less and stay home more. Even if you are
on a tight budget, you will need to find things for your kids to do to keep them occupied this
summer. If you are planning to stay close to home this summer there are many things you can do
to keep your kids occupied to with fun activities. Following are a few suggestions for making the
summer more enjoyable for everyone.
Plan a weekly picnic- This does not have to involve travel or great expense but can be a fun
time for everyone to plan and prepare for some time outdoors.
Plant a garden- If you start early you can grow your garden from seeds and teach about plant
life and nutrition. This can be an enjoyable activity for the kids that is also a great learning
experience.
Plan a regular library night- Libraries are a wonderful source of free entertainment and are
something you can do with your kids.
Camp in the backyard-On a warm starlit night, your kids can find great enjoyment in star gazing
and listening to the wildlife that surrounds your home.
Have a yard sale-This is a great way to clean out the house and to get rid of some of those old
“treasures” you no longer need. It also helps teach the kids some business sense, and
depending on the size of your sale you may earn some extra spending money.
Take advantage of the park and rec programs- While they have changed from when you
were young, today these programs are great ways to keep your kids active during the summer
months.
Take advantage of sports and activity camps- There are camps almost every week of the
summer involving some sports or activities. Many organizations such as the United Way offer
scholarships for many of these programs.
Attend community band concerts and outdoor plays-Most cities have municipal bands or
Community Theater groups that put on free concerts and plays during the summer. These can be
a great learning experience for your kids.
Take in a car, boat or motorcycle show- Most cities have car shows or something similar
during the summer months. These are a great way to teach your kids about things you may be
already doing as a hobby.
Schedule a weekly pool night-Swimming is not only fun for the kids but it is also great exercise
for everyone. Watch for special movie nights, that your local pool may sponsor.
Once the school year ends boredom sets in relatively quickly for kids if you fail to keep
them busy. Just giving them activities to look forward to, and by spending time with them
will help to make the summer months more enjoyable for everyone.
