Health care providers and family members who take care of others can easily become so overwhelmed with their responsibilities
that they neglect their own physical and emotional health. If you are struggling to take care of your own needs here are some
tips for getting back on top of your own health.
Find Help- You need to accept the fact early on that you cannot do
it all alone. Find others whether it is co-workers or family members
to provide you the help you need.
Locate Community Resources- The better you know the resources available, the less you feel
obligated to do it all yourself. Most communities have services like a “Community Helpline” which can
serve as a link to resources.
Become Educated-Do not assume you are going to be told all of the options or resources. The better
educated you become; the more effective you will be at knowing what care options are available.
Take Care of You- Easier said than done. Get enough rest, watch your diet, and get some form of
daily exercise.
Know you are Making a Difference- It is easy to beat yourself up and to want to do more. Give
yourself a pat on the back for being there and doing what you can.
Accept Change- Despite your best efforts many things are out of your control. Accept that things may
not go as planned, and keep on moving forward.
With our family and friends living longer we will all be put in the role of being a caregiver at some point in our lives? The better
we prepare ourselves for this role the easier it will be to take on these responsibilities.
