When is Debriefing Necessary

When companies think of disaster, they think of fire alarms, emergency escape routes, safety training and hazardous materials.  What most
businesses fail to consider it that if a disaster occurs, are they prepared to deal with the emotional aspects of helping their employees?  Even
companies with Employee Assistance Programs (EAP's) fail to realize that many such programs have no local presence and rely on subcontracts to
provide these services.  Will they be ready and available if a disaster strikes their business?

It is obvious that not all disasters can be prevented, or that everything that needs to be ready will be.  But one concern that can be dealt with is
that you are ready to deal with the emotional side of such an event with the employees in your workplace.  Following are some workplace
situations that may warrant Critical Incident Stress Debriefing:

                                          *   Robbery or attempted Robbery
                                          *  Unexpected death by suicide, murder or accident
                                          *  Critical injury or illness in an employee
                                          *  Kidnapping or hostage situations
                                          *  Natural disaster
                                          *  Soldiers or their families when they return from war
                                          *  Major company changes or reorganization
                                          *  Sudden layoffs or employee terminations
                                          *  Illegal activity such as embezzlement or theft
                                          *  Domestic violence that spills over into the workplace
                                          *  Accidental fire or arson
                                          *  Negative customer complaints or Interactions

In considering your companies needs relating to CISD services it is important to have a relationship with a provider prior to the incident that
requires debriefing.  It is very helpful that the providers know you, your business and the stresses and strains of your employees.
