There are frequently situations that arise when it is necessary for Grandparents to step in and assume the role of parent. Whether it be as a result of divorce, illness or even death, when grandparents are called upon to raise their grandchildren they face a unique set of challenges that accompany the joy of raising children.
While many grandparents love the opportunity to be a parent all over again, they still must realistically deal with the challenges they face in being a parent after their prime of life. Following are some of the unique challenges grandparents face in raising their grandchildren:
Being able to keep up- not only are you older, but the activity level of children in the world today has increased. Whether infants, youth, or teenagers, kids today are simply more active, presenting more of a challenge for you to keep up with them.
Financial Challenges- Your retirement fund may not have included plans for diapers, health insurance, education, and entertainment for a whole new generation of family. Keeping up financially can be a real struggle.
Emotional Aspects of Grand parenting- Whether it is because of a divorce, illness or death, you have become a parent again because something has happened in your own child’s life. You need to be able to deal with this emotionally to be able to help your grandchildren deal with their own feelings toward their parents.
You are the “Sandwiched, Sandwich” generation. You need to worry about yourself, as your own children are not able to, yet you also carry the burden of worrying and caring for your grandchildren. This presents some unique challenges for you to ensure you and the grandchildren are taken care of.
Finding Time for Yourself- These are your “golden” years, and regardless of the amount of pressure put on you, you need to make time for yourself; however is much easier said than done.
Parenting as a grandparent is difficult, but the joy and wonder of being able to see your grandchildren grow and mature as a result of your love and guidance is immeasurable. This will be one of the most rewarding times of your lives, and with the proper support and guidance your family will thrive because of your efforts.
