How to Get Back on Track
after the Holidays

Now that the holidays are over many of you may be feeling the blues.  While the holidays are always
a time of great anticipation and excitement, it seems as though this quickly fades, and we rapidly
return to the rigors of everyday life.  While this may just be a bump in the road for some people, for
others it is a more difficult time filled with loneliness and despair.  If you find that you are struggling to
get on track after the holidays here are some tips to help you recover:

1.         Start to eat and drink a more normal diet.  While it seems like a small thing, holiday diets are
filled with sugar, carbohydrates, and for some people alcohol.  All of these can affect our moods and
our health.  The faster we get back to a normal, healthy diet, the sooner we can return to normal
emotionally.

2.        Even though you were active during the holidays you probably did not exercise or take care of
yourself physically like you normally do.  Now is the time to slowly start getting back into a
manageable fitness routine.

3.        Savor the fun you had during the holidays.  Start putting those pictures in scrapbooks, or
posting your favorite memories on face book or twitter.  Relive the time you had with your friends and
loved ones to keep yourself emotionally charged.

4.        Start planning the year ahead.  Take out your new calendar and begin filling it in with
birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and special events.   Rather than dreading what you have lost,
start looking forward to what is coming in the months ahead.

5.        Have a post holiday gathering of friends, neighbors and family.  Help yourself and others to
beat the post holiday blahs by planning a mid-winter gathering.  This helps to keep you connected,
and makes the remaining months of winter pass by more quickly.

6.        Finally, make sure to plan for the cold and dark of winter once the holiday excitement is over.
Make sure you get outside several times a week to soak up what sunshine there is and try to get
back into a normal sleep routine

The holidays don’t have to end the second the last present is wrapped, but it also it wise to start
moving on so that you don’t find yourself in a mid-winter rut.  Try to get yourself going, get
reconnected to friends and neighbors and focus on getting out and keeping busy.  The sooner you
get moving, the quicker you will recover from that holiday hangover.
